Day 131 - 15th May 2017 - Ovenbird, Tulip and Tree Swallow

Here we are back at Monday. Rained hard yesterday afternoon and evening probably a little more on the way for today but not much. I did get for a quick run around the hood yesterday morning, but it was quiet. Not much around since it was windy and a little on the cooler side. Did the normal Sunday things, cooking, etc. Had a good visit and chatter with friends after lunch. The early mornings of the week finally had caught up with me, I had a super early night and slept probably 9 hours. Guess I needed that. Larry's home from work at lunch as he's got an eye appointment in Yarmouth. Guess I may go along, need to pick up a few things that I can't get here.
Ovenbird
This is a much smaller Tulip but very pretty with the yellow edgings.

Tree Swallow resting on the wires. The seem to have a lot of energy chasing and catching flies.

Our resident Mallards.

Day 130 - 14th May 2017 - Black & White Warbler, Northern Parula and a Deer

Happy Mother's Day! I was fortunate to grow up and have a great Mother, Grandmothers and a Great Grandmother in my life for many years. Still lucky to have my Mom. The Grandmothers and Great are gone but they were strong, resilient woman who taught us so much and spent loads of time with us. The sky was telling the tale of what's on the way for today - it was beautiful and red. Rain coming. After the fog and cold yesterday it turned out to be a lovely summer day. Warm and sunny. Stopped in Barrington and picked up our Chase the Ace tickets (we didn't win, but the Ace didn't go either so another week and maybe...) We had no luck  at A quick stop for groceries and then homeward bound to take advantage of the weather. Larry mowed the lawn and worked in the wood pile. I made a quick jaunt around the hood, did some yard work and a few things inside.
Another first of the season - Black & White Warbler, love seeing the return of the Warblers to the hood.
Northern Parula - quite a few of these little ones around now.
Willet foraging for breakfast at Daniel's Head.
One of three deer that were together, close to the road and very tame. This was a little spike horn.

Day 129 - 13th May 201 - Ovenbird, Violets and Wild Strawberries

Moon is full this morning, pretty foggy out there with a bit of a chill in the air. Song Sparrow are beginning their daylight singing.  Loons are talking in the lake. Even though I get up way too early, I love the morning sounds of the country. We are going to try finding the Sandhill Crane once again on Cape Sable Island, he was sighted the other day, so fingers crossed. Will pick up our Chase the Ace tickets in Barrington and do some grocery shopping.  Hopefully we'll get some work done around the yard afterwards. Tomorrow is rain in the forecast so will be an inside day and plans to do some visiting. Friday was lunch out and Friday Night Club - more laughs than usual, some of us were wound up more than normal.  A pair of Geese with little ones were reported by a neighbour but after chasing around a good portion of the lake, I failed to find them. Will keep my eyes open though.
First of the season - Ovenbird. His song is the distinctive - "teach..er".
Purple Wild Violets are in bloom everywhere, also a few white ones.
Wild Strawberries are blooming too, soon to be setting fruit.

Enjoy your day!

Day 128 - 12th May 2017 - Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, Flycatcher and Ferns

Did a lot of roaming on Thursday, hunting for birds. They were few and far between but I did see a couple of interesting ones. Once I braved ticks, flies (thankfully no coyotes) I spotted a Flycatcher - not sure about which kind but it's been suggested an Acadian. Finally after supper the male Rose Breasted Grosbeak arrived in the yard. Hanging high in a few trees, he didn't make it down to the feeders but I'll keep my eyes open for him. It's Friday and town/lunch day with Margie. Will get out around the hood if it's not raining this morning, then a few things to do around the house before heading out.
The female Rose Breasted Grosbeak is still here.
The Male - handsome of course shyly checking things out.

The Flycatcher - first of the season, perhaps an Acadian. They are difficult to tell apart.

 I love watching the ferns.

Enjoy your day!

Day 127 - 11th May 2017 -Lake, Blooms and Mallards

It did clear off on Wednesday but not warm and sunny - oh well some days are like that. It's lovely to get up to the sound of song birds and go to bed with the same sound. Song Sparrows and Hermit Thrushes are the first and last to sing every day. One of the joys of living in the country. It's a little overcast this morning, but they are claiming it will clear. Sounds like a good day for a roam in the hood and probably some more time in my sewing room. It's getting closer to returning to work, lots of things to do in the next week or two. But for now I'll enjoy the rest of my days at home.
Dark storm clouds came in over the lake after supper producing a quick rain shower.
Bushes are blooming - berries will soon be forming.
Our yard feeding Mallards, they come often now.

Enjoy your day!

Day 126 - 10th May 2017 - Violets, Palm Warbler and Mallard

I goofed on the weather yesterday, rained hard all day, clearing after supper. Well it was a good day to work inside. Found space again in the sewing room, started a new shift(chemise) for work and had a big pot of soup simmering on the stove. Cathy stopped for coffee so she got biscuits right out of the oven and soup to go with her coffee. Looks like a better morning today, birds are singing, a pair of Mallards are having breakfast. I'm off to town to do a little volunteer work for a few hours and then some errands.

Wild Violets are blooming.

Palm Warbler hiding in the branches.
Larry's latest girlfriend, she's been coming to visit the lasts few evenings. He feeds her. Last night 4 male Mallards arrived as well.

Enjoy your day!

Day 125 - 9th May 2017 - Hermit Thrush, Ferns and Mallards

A little rain overnight, but no more than a splattering - only showers predicted though so still can get out and roam. Another room done yesterday, lots of roaming and some yard work. It was windy so kept the flies away, good day to be out. Nancy and Sandy stopped over for a visit in the evening while they were out for a walk. Today I better tackle my sewing room and straighten that out, next week I have a few things I need to whip up. Think today will be homemade soup - the last of the season til the weather cools down again.
Wild Pear or Cherry I can never tell which.
 Hermit Thrush
Ferns are popping their heads through the ground.

And our newest yard birds.

Enjoy your day!
