Temperature is just above zero +0.6. Another day of choices in the weather department - I'm betting more drizzle for here. Would love to see some sun. Woke up in the night to the digital clock flashing so guess the power went out at some point. Larry has one on his side and I have one on my night stand so I felt like I was in the middle of a disco after that - with flashing clocks! Need to finish off the newsletter so that can be printed on Wednesday and snail mailed/emailed. Glad the bulk go via email. I think I've got a few other computer projects to finish off and Lexi and I will roam around some.
So yesterday was damp, drizzly again, but the temperatures are creeping upward so can't complain too much. I'm sure I heard a loon in the morning but since the ice is breaking up in the lake and not gone I must have been mistaken, but can be hopeful. The chickadees were starting to sing their spring time song so yes I think it's on it's way. Before you know it all those snow birds south of the border will soon be heading homeward too. Cinnamon rolls again in the morning, cut them a bit smaller but they are still plenty big.
Exercise class last night and it was a good work out! I needed that.
The red breasted nuthatch, one of my favourite visitors.
I think the goldfinches are fence sitters.
Finally the White breasted nuthatch arrived and spent most of the morning hanging out at the deck feeder.
Another fence sitter - the Red Polls are very photogenic.
Rain drops and reflections in the cranberry ditch.
Batch of cinnamon rolls - and they were so good!
The gang's all here!
Well time to kick start myself and get moving. Enjoy your day!

Day 63 - 4th March 2013 - Birds, The lake is Breaking and Pussy Willows Beginning
Monday morning folks, time to get back to work. I know, every Monday we wonder where the weekend went. Temperature is +1.7 and we have a chance of rain showers or flurries, sounds like yesterday's weather forecast. For me it's back to normal today, Lexi and I at home and Larry's going with the guys to take the boat for launching. So some baking, minimal housework, research and roaming around the hood. Sounds like a great day to me!
The days are definitely getting longer, morning comes sooner and evening later. I think the time springs ahead within the next week or so. Sunday was drizzly and the sun peeped in and out but never stayed with us for long, the air was warmer though and the snow is melting which is a bonus. Soon we will see more greens popping through. Larry has been going over and over the seed catalogue for months now, so I guess I had better put in the order this week. Most things we plant directly in the ground but there are a few like tomatoes and peppers we like to start in the house and transplant. One year I ordered early which meant in his excitement he planted early and a month before they could go in the ground we had 3' tomato plants. 2-3 dozen of those take up a lot of space even if they are on the deck during the day being hardened off. So now I try to hold off as long as possible.
I know some of you might be tired of the birds, but before too long these ones will be gone and hopefully new ones will replace them. For now they offer some color during the drab months.
I played around with this one a bit.
A serious looking guy.
The lake looks like it's beginning to break up.
First sign of spring - pussy willows are starting to open.
Everyone is enjoying the feeder.
Time for another coffee. Enjoy your day!

Day 62 - 3rd March 2013 - Cranberries and Birds in the Hood
Sunday, temperature is +0.4 and it's kind of blah out. They are giving a chance of flurries or rain, nice to have a choice! It's good to sleep in and not get up in the middle of the night for a change but I"m beginning to fear that I'm lay in bed too long. Need to shake that off and find sometime in the middle to make me happy. Early enough to have some me time but late enough to feel rested.
Yesterday was one of those overcast mild days, with a bit of drizzle by late afternoon. Did our town thing in the morning, then home by lunch time. Larry worked on making some bird feeders and I did some laundry and computer work. I stalked the neighbours feeders yesterday afternoon, usually they don't mind - most are used to me.
Ice is mostly gone from the cranberry ditches.
This is from mine - the little brown creeper - so hard to see them as they blend in with the wood.
The chickadees are always amusing.
A Junco.
A few more cranberries.
Not sure if she is a Downy or a Hairy Woodpecker.
I love this feeder. The small birds can get in but not the squirrels or large birds. On my list for next year.
And the Feeder thief - he's cute just the same.
White throated Sparrow and Junco.
White breasted Nuthatch. I have the red breasted ones but rarely see these ones at my feeders.
Must go look in the freezer for something for supper and get going. Enjoy your Day!

Day 61 - 2nd March 2013 - Birds on a Snowy Day
Saturday and off to town sometime today for groceries, dog food, gas and we will be broke again. Oh well, guess we can't take it with us. I'm not expecting anything terrible exciting to take place today but you never know the way things have been going lately.
Yesterday was snow storm day, or at least mid way through the morning most of the weather stations decided we were having one. Sometimes it's better if you use common sense instead of listening to the "experts". I puttered around did some house work and computer work. Larry was home and decided to do a soup out of the last of the turkey - that bird really lasted a long time! Good value for $12.00.
It was a great day at the feeders, one thing about a snow storm - the birds are all hungry and a better judge of the weather. I got a little carried away with the bird photos but they were good subjects and fun to watch.
Red Polls were all around.
Mixed in with a a Goldfinch or two.
The arrival of the Evening Grosbeaks.
Nice to have some bright colors to look at on a snowy day!
Everyone seems to be getting a turn in the feeder.
The fence provides extra seating.
And some just wait in the trees.
Time for my coffee. Enjoy your day!

Day 60 - 1st March 2013 - Boats, Birds and Grasses
Welcome March, what will you bring?? Think it might be a case of "in like a Lion...out like a lamb". It's -0.1 and snowing, only suppose to get 10 cms but once again - Who knows! Schools have been cancelled in this area so kids are once again happy with a long weekend I'm sure. Not sure what to do around here today - some of the same old thing - laundry, housework, etc. Larry's home with me so will have him underfoot as well.
Yesterday we went to town around noon so Larry could help get the boat they just finished out of the shop and ready to go. I went to my friend's Dad's funeral. It's sad to say good by to someone who was such a good person and loved by so many. Hopefully as time goes on they can take some bit of comfort in all their memories and the memories of others. Exercise class last evening and it was good to have a work out both my body and mind needed it.
The finished product.
As she comes out of the shop.
Ready to roll, but I think with the weather today she won't be going far.
I suspected bad weather on it's way when I saw all these Evening Grosbeaks hanging out yesterday. I usually get a few every day but only the large flock before and during bad weather. I'm thinking the birds are smarter than the weather people!
These grasses near the lake hang on all year round.
The sassy little squirrel sits high in the tree nattering at me!
Once again I'm late but before too long I'll get back on track. Enjoy your day!
