Day 159 - 7th June 2012 - More Flowers and Fungi

Oh I've got to learn to stay in bed until 5:30am! Every morning lately my eyes pop open at 4:30. Weather is suppose to be ok today except for some drizzle this morning, but it doesn't look like it will be really warm. The temperature now is +8.2. Back to work this morning and for the next few weeks I'm catching an earlier ride. It's going to make for long days. Hoping to get lots done in the next few days, I'll soon have my summer student starting at the centre so that will make a big difference. Nothing like having an extra body around to help out even if it's only for a couple of months.

No rain yesterday, but windy and cold. Hey I'm not complaining. The sun did peek out for brief interludes and I mean brief!  Larry got to work, Lexi and I did work around the house and on the computer, went for a couple of walks with the camera and had tea with Lois, all in all not a bad day. Played cards last night, women lost, I wasn't on my game, that's for sure.

Beaver Farm Lake was quiet and peaceful early this morning. All I could hear were birds chirping as we walked along the road.
Not sure what happen to these poor lupins, but they all seem to have a kink in their tops!
Another day or two and this one should be open. It's a little bit ragged from the wind and rain.
There are lady slippers every where in the woods. Not a great photo, but you get the idea!
I love this tree, with all the fungi up and down it!
Another beautiful Rhododenrom in a neighbour's yard. Yes, I've been creeping around again, just can't help myself.
I found a few more groups of Twinflowers today. I've never seen them here before.
Daylight is arriving, but once again no beautiful sunrise with is. Seems that it's been so long since we've seen one of those. Time to get moving and make things happen.
Enjoy your day!

Day 158 - 6th June 2012 - Journal Entries & Hummingbirds

Wednesday and my day off, dare I even look out the window to see what the weather is doing. Too dark yet, but I don't hear anything..........maybe, just maybe it will clear. Our digital weather station is showing the little sun symbol so lets hope. It's +8.9 this morning. Really this time of year temperatures aren't all that interesting but it's habit. Guess I'll work hard today, in hopes that the weekend will be fine and we can take a day and maybe enjoy some of the Lobster Festival events around the county. It's that time of year when there are lobster suppers, lunches, etc all over the county.
It's been a while since I've shared some of the grandmother's journal entries, so I thought I'd take a peek and see what had been going on a few years ago.

Monday 4 June 1973: To town early, Kim stayed with us. Picked up Annie H. and her brother took them to welshtown. Lovely day. Saw a deer. Trees are beautiful now, all colors as nice as fall color I think. Home 7:30. I work mornings.
Tuesday 5th: Town early. Leaves most out, color lovely this morning. Very tired tonight, to bed early. Game on. [Baseball - my grandfather was a Boston Red Sox fan, and listened to it on the radio, they had no tv in the country - no power].
Wednesday 6th: Fine morning. To town early. Clouded over while playing golf. Had good afternoon. Saw bull moose at Beaver Dam. Pot luck supper not as good as usual.

I enjoy reading about the birds and wildlife she saw, when the planted the garden, harvested the apples and all the daily routine. It gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling of family. Usually my Mom and Dad are mentioned, or my brothers and myself, friends who are no longer with us anymore.
I caught this little fellow just about the time I should have been heading upstairs to get ready for work, but I couldn't resist taking a few moments for photos.

He was preening and bathing and looking all around.
I had to leave him before he decided to fly off!
Can't resist a few more ferns.
Hopefully by the time the sun comes out these will be in bloom.

Well, the rest of the house will be up soon, so I must make good use of the my quiet time. Another coffee, and then on to read a few chapters of Water St. with my red pen in hand [just kidding Karen].
Enjoy your day!

Day 157 - 5th June 2012 - Royals, Iris' and Lightening Strikes

Tuesday and another day of rain by the sounds of what I hear outside. It feels like punishment some how. The temperature is +9.3 and dawn is breaking.

The last few days have shown England celebrating  The Queen's Diamond Jubilee in other words 60 years as Monarch. I've been watching bits and pieces of it on TV and it's quite marvelous to see all the festivities, etc. I'm sure most people can not even imagine having a job for that many years, especially one that the world watches. Many households in Canada still hold a soft spot for the Royal Family. I think these days that Kate is probably the new sweetheart of the family. Personally I loved her red dress and hat that she wore on the flotilla. I think today they end the big celebrations with more events including a balcony appearance toward the end of the day.

So yesterday came and went. Some things accomplished, not everything I wanted, but overall not a bad day except for the rain and dampness.
Yellow Iris in my garden.....yes mine, not a neighbours!
Last week we had a thunder and lightening storm one night. Looks like lightening struck this tree went down splitting the bark, travelled through the root and up the other tree a short distance.
One of the apple trees in the yard, loaded with Wisteria blooms. The birds certainly seem to love those flowers.

Some of the wild iris' that I found along the lake.
They are so pretty as they sit along the edge of the water.
Well as I've been writing, daylight has come, no sun with it. However, I don't hear rain anymore so perhaps it will clear or is that wishful thinking. No matter, I still have get myself ready. Larry and Lexi are up and out for their morning stroll. Lexi will want to get the paper that never comes this early anymore. Time for me to put the kettle back on.
Enjoy your day!

Day 156 - 4th June 2012 - Foam and Flowers

Another Monday, another rainy day. Temperature is +9.3. I'm beginning to think I open every Monday morning that way. Glad last week is over and we are on to a fresh new week. Karen is making progress with our Water St. book, three chapters finished on her end, my turn to go through editing, [truthfully with Karen, there is very little editing, just mostly a few suggestions here and there]. This weekend I'll start putting it into book format and inserting photos. Just need to get the rest of the chapters tidied up now. I think it will be a great publication and I'm excited to see it done. Water St. in Shelburne has probably been the busiest street since 1783, so there is lots of history there to delve into. Have lots of other things to get done today, need to finish off some research for  a few people and since it's raining a few locals may show up today to do their own.

Sunday was cooler, didn't rain until late afternoon then not a lot til evening. Ran my little heart out getting things done in the morning before it started. Flowers that Irene had given me last weekend, planted, some grass clipped,  a walk through the woods, photos gone through for show, etc. It was kind of a catch up day.
Blackberry blossoms. Soon the berries will appear, they are so tasty, especially on cereal in the morning.
Ummmm...... Hostas in the woods? That's rather strange, think someone must have been cleaning out a garden!
The lake was rough this morning, lots of waves and white foam.
Thick fluffy foam all along the edge of the lake.
Looks like someone took a can of shaving cream and sprayed it around.
My blue Iris' are beginning to pop out.
Guess it's time for that second cup of coffee. Positive thoughts and lots of progress on my mind this week.
Enjoy your day.

Day 155 - 3rd June 2012 - More Flowers and Ferns

The sky looks pretty blue with fluffy clouds this morning, temperature is back to +11.5. They are giving rain for later this morning, then they next few days. Not sure what we'll do today, probably mostly indoor stuff if it rains. I should do some weeding in the flower beds and I have a few more plants to get in. Then I need to sort through my photos and pick those I'm using for the show and of course there is always Water St. and housework. Sounds like I have no end of choices.

A totally successful day yesterday at the Yardsale. The Society raised a good sum of money which was badly needed. It's difficult to find fundraisers that really raise a lot at once, most are small amounts so we have to continue to do more and more. It's great when we have lots of volunteers, like today who can share the load or take turns, sometimes we only have a few. Got home around 2pm after picking up some groceries, etc. By that time we were beat and hungry. Food a bit of a rest then back at it. Larry to the garden me around here and a walk. Burn and crash for an early evening in front of the TV.
The Daisies are out along the side of the road.
The Mother Mallard with four babies was in the lake this afternoon. They are more skiddish and don't hang around for photos like the other group.
The water lilies are beginning to show up in the lake as well.
Some more beautiful blooms in someone elses yard.
There are so many different kinds of ferns. Guess it's time I brush up on them. Gogle or Book?
I always think they look pretty cool when they are starting to uncurl.

Well guess it's time to finish up my coffee, and start some laundry. Since everyone else is still in bed, guess I'll continue with sorting through photos and choosing some for the show and a few I'd like to have prints of for gifts.
Enjoy your day!

Day 154 - 2nd June 2012 - Iris', Twinflowers and lupins

I can see daylight coming, even though it's early again today and the temperature has dropped to +8.5 this morning. Off to the Yardsale this morning, get set up and sell our "treasures". You know the saying one person's junk is another person's treasure. I'm sure we have something for everyone. Great to see people pull together and help out. Will grab a few groceries before coming home, then Larry wants to get some more seeds planted in the garden. Hopefully he'll finish everything but the Tomatoes, Peppers and Cauliflower that we started in the house. They need to wait until after next week and some can use a little more size to them before going out. Then we can sit back and wait for harvest time. Ah, just kidding, lots of weeding etc to be done during the summer.

Finally yesterday was beautiful, sunny and warm and most everyone was working. I keep the blinds down at the centre to keep the sun from fading the books, but really so I can't see how nice it is outside in the summer and bleak in the winter. Method to my madness! Rushed around when I got home, supper, load of laundry, dishes and stuff ready for tomorrow. We had supper, then Larry and Lexi headed up to the garden to do some more planting. It's hard to get things in the ground with so much rain and working.
A nice grouping of lupins, a little bit of the evening light hits them.
The Twin Flowers won't be around too long so thought I'd catch a few more photos to hold me til next Spring.
There hasn't been much activity on the lake this week. I haven't seen any babies or geese, just a few lone ducks here and there.
Lois has some beautiful Iris' in her garden.
I have some yellow iris' starting, should soon have some blue ones.
They really are a lovely flower.
Not quite sure what this flower is, but she has several in her garden. I like the texture and look of it, nice contrast with some of the other plants.
Well almost time to get the rest of the household up and get everyone moving. Enjoy your day!

Day 153 - 1st June 2012 - Old Sign, Duck and Ships

Yah, it's Friday. Up a little earlier than normal, temperature is at the norm of +11.5. Tomorrow is the big Townwide Yard Sale, if you are in the area, check it out. Susan and I went through some of the stuff folks have donated at the centre, and there are some some pretty interesting things. We also put some stuff together for our on-line auction too. We are a non-profit organization, which means continuous fund raising to keep  our work in research, genealogy and preservation going and our doors open. It's all for a good cause so we keep it up. Thanks to the hardwork of some faithful members.

Hard to believe we are beginning month six of the year, half way gone and where did it go? Thursday was not bad, better than Tuesday. Lots accomplished, including some Water St. stuff to keep Karen out of trouble. The sun didn't actually come out until almost supper time, it was just kind of overcast most of the day. Today sounds like a much better weather day.

Our last photography class was last night. I think all the girls had a hard week, no one was very lively. The hard part now is to pick 6 photos to have printed for the Show in July, but we have to do decide this by Monday.  Larry gets to display a few too as he was part of the class last fall, so Sunday we'll set some time aside to go through them, get them cropped to size, etc. Might get a few others done just to use as gifts for Christmas. Have to get some frames too, oh June already sounds busy and it just started!

A lone Mallard moves quickly through the lake. I've not seen our geese in almost a week. Am so sad not to be able to watch them, hopefully they will come back again to visit.
I'm borrowing a few of Larry's photos, one he took looking towards the wharf.
Larry found this in the woods - left over from another time. A number of years ago Demi Moore arrived in Shelburne and filmed The Scarlet Letter movie. While it was a great year for our small town, the movie fell rather flat.
My old friend the woodpecker.
Well seems like I have a mish mash of writing and photos today. It's kind of like leftovers made into hash! Another cup of coffee and get things mobile. I see daylight coming but no bright sun let.
Enjoy your day.
