Cooler this morning, stars are all hanging in the sky early and it's very quiet except for a few apples falling from the tree and hitting the wood shed roof. Working the weekend but before I head in this morning will hit the hood and see what's around. Then I'll tackle the grocery shopping. Best to get it done before work - it's less stressful for sure. Larry started ripping up the old flooring last evening so will continue in the reno department today. First job will be to level up the floor.
A hot Friday, some wind but not enough to really cool you off. Quiet at work, but lots of things to catch up on so the day flew by as it always does. We must be at the end of summer as our student finishes today. Will be sad to see her go, she's been such a joy to work with. Hopefully she'll return next season.

Day 232 - 19th August 2016 - Magnolia Warbler, Ducks and Palm Warbler
Back to work. Our reno stuff didn't make it yesterday but will be delivered today, so Larry will leave work a bit early to meet the truck. That will provide him with some entertainment while I'm working this weekend and probably the next few. Looks like another fine day, no rain in sight til the first of the week (maybe).
Beautiful day off. Headed out early for my stalk around the hood - boy is it ever getting quiet these days, hardly a bird around. I puttered around the house, got a few things done, off for another walk, tea with Lois. Then went to town for lunch with the girls at Charlotte Lane Cafe. Nice time, lots of laughter. After all laughter is the best medicine!

Palm Warbler
Ducks in the lake - the water has come up a tad but not much.
And a local rodent, hanging out on Lois' gazeboo.

Day 231 - 18th August 2016 - Black & White Warbler, Magnolia and Common Yellowthroat
Day off - same old song - up too early. Guess I better get some stuff done here and maybe a jaunt around the hood. Hopefully we'll get our reno supplies delivered today so won't get too far until I hear from Wilson's. Maybe Larry can get started while I'm working this weekend, looking forward to having a shower installed. The lunch box meals in the freezer are beginning to disappear so time to whip up a few more of those and get my stock built back up again.
So the day cleared off, reports say about 32 mm for here, not enough but every little bit helps. Had a little rant last night regarding the Department of Natural Resources lifting the ban on travel in the woods and fire bans. Unreal! Seriously there is no cure for stupid. Overall a good day at work, fairly busy but the humidity landed once again, by evening though the wind had hauled and was much better.
I thought this as Butter & Eggs, but I'm not sure. Grows wild and I see it every summer. So I've been corrected by a good friend - it's Jewelweed!

Day 230 - 17th August 2016 - Red Sky, Palm Warbler and Black Throated Blue Warbler
Rain is finally happening, coming down really hard. Although they say it will clear early this afternoon I'd like to see a good 24 hours of this. We need so much but at least this is a good start and will make a difference with the forest fires, etc. Larry got all the rain buckets and barrels in place last evening so we should be good for the garden again. I'm in early with Larry this morning, so best take my umbrella, won't be taking Big B. today.
Had a good walk yesterday morning, heavy mist rising from the lake. Always enjoy watching it. A few birds around, but they are beginning to move on I think. Fall Migration has started no doubt, even though technically August is still summer. Well it's also the time we get a chance to see a few rarities or migrates as they pass through. Busy day at work, lots of visitors and new stuff for our gift shop!

Day 229 - 16th August 2016 - Morning Reflections, Song Sparrow and Northern Parula
The wind feels like it's hauled more northerly this morning, blowing some of the humidity out - hopefully it remains that way today. Would be a nice relief.
Need I say another day of more heat, humidity and no rain. They are now forecasting rain for Tuesday night into Wednesday, fingers crossed but not holding my breath. Those weather people are wrong way too many times! The lake was so calm and peaceful Monday morning, making a good start to the day except my glasses kept steaming up when I was chasing birds in the bushes.
Grandmother's Journal:
15 August 1977: Overcast and drizzle early. Clearing and beautiful this evening. Kim came up with us. Gorgeous tonight. No birds around now. Saw twin fawns on way home. Home 5 o'clock.
16 August 1977: Cold over night. Saw Doe & fawn in Warner's field. Lovely day. Kim back with us tonight as we are home earlier for a few days. See a few Partridges now. Over to Reggie's for a few minutes this evening
17 August 1977: Very hard rain some places thunder and lightning. In distance from us. Very hard rain. Kim came up with us. Tired tonight.
Even as a teenager I enjoyed my time in Middle Clyde. Loved roaming the woods, usually with one of the dogs by my side.
Reflections in the lake as the sun made it's way through the morning clouds.
You see more rocks than water these days.

Day 228 - 15th August 2016 - Winter Wren, White Throated Sparrow and Alder Flycatcher
Weekend is over, back to work. Not sure how much I got accomplished but we can blame lack of work on heat, humidity and lack of rain. It was a good weekend - got some birding and shopping in, as well as a little down time. Stars are all out this morning - looks like another warm day in the making.
Very little rain but lots of humidity on Sunday. We headed off to Yarmouth via the back road since that's the route to see things and we did. One live Coyote and a dead one, Dear, a Bear, a Mink, two Red-Tailed Hawks, Canada Geese, Common Yellowthroat Warblers and Alder Flycatchers. So it was a good drive. Picked up some stuff at Red and White, then went off in the direction of Overton and out to Thomas Road. I was rewarded with a lifer - Winter Wren, more Common Yellowthroats, Red Breasted Nuthatches, Yellow Warblers, a Cedar Waxwing, White Throated Sparrow and some shorebirds on the way back. Since we wanted to get home early, we didn't go any further and ended our birding. Finished off the errands we needed to do and headed back home.
The lifer -Winter Wren. There were actually two flitting around, hiding in branches but I remained patient.

Day 227 - 14th August 2016 - Dowitchers, Great Blue Heron and Black-Bellied Plover
A few rain drops fell overnight but not many, hopefully more to come today. Think we'll make a quick trip to Yarmouth this morning, don't want to waste the whole day but do need to pick up a few things out of town. Then to get ready for the work week - some food prep, etc.
We had a pretty great day. A few rain drops but nothing that deterred me from my mission. Drove down through Port Clyde - Thomasville - Port LaTour, checking out the ponds along the way. A few Great Blue Herons and some Greater Yellow Legs. Stopped at Crows Neck Beach found some peeps, a couple of Spotted Sandpipers and CommonTerns. Headed to my main destination Sandhills Beach - first time we've been there this year. Lots of Semipalmted Plovers, Sandpipers, Least and Sanderlings, Dowitchers, a few Black Bellied Sandpipers and Terns. A little disappointed we didn't see any Red Knots, but it's great to walk along with the shorebirds as they feed - such a peaceful feeling. Headed over to Barrington and order the supplies for the Bathroom reno - will be nice to get it started. Lunch at Dan's and some grocery shopping and then homeward bound.
