Day 14 - 14th January 2018- Reflections, Fungi and an Old Tree

So it's confirmed - I've become lazy - two mornings in a row not up before 6am! I'll take it when I can. It's a little chillier this morning and there's snow on the ground. We haven't had a fire in the furnace since Friday night. Saturday was warm enough that you could have opened the windows. Very balmy indeed with our normal wind - way too windy! But now we head back to more seasonal temperatures, hopefully it won't go too cold. Did a little housework and made a big pot of chili yesterday morning. Got out for a quick walk in the hood. Then the girls and I went to Chase the Ace in Jordan - no wins for any of us, but the Ace did go. Think we might take a run to town today, I've got the urge to do some Frenchy's shopping and I've got a gift card I can use from Christmas. Time for a few new sweaters. If the weather is good, might take a run to the industrial park.
I like the peacefulness along the lake.
 Fungi cover this tree stump.
This old dead tree has survived the winds.

Day 13 - 13th January 2018 - Reflections and Grasses

I've overslept or slept in not sure which but it felt good for a change.  Now there is a "rainfall and wind" warning up on the weather sites. I guess by the way the wind has been howling all night I didn't really need to read it, but they are right. We are ready for a power outage, although my plan is to  make a pot of storm chili, so I probably need to get that underway soon. Had a great morning at work, then it was Thelma and Louise lunch out. Larry of course beat us all in marbles (Aggravation). Sooner or later we will get him back! Today will be a housework day and maybe Chase the Ace in Jordan. Since the internet is slow and I've slept in, we are really late this morning.

Day 12 - 12th January 2018 - Ice, Rock and the Lake

It feels more like early spring or fall this morning, temperature is way up and the snow has all disappeared. The red warning bar has appeared on the weather sites - looks like lots of rain of rain for us, maybe some freezing rain in parts of the province. Rain to start tonight and move through Saturday. Maybe a pot of Chili tomorrow morning would be good comfort food in bad weather.  I'm working this morning, only worked 1/2 day Thursday. Since it's Friday and a new year - yup - it's Thelma and Louise day! Rah!! And Friday night club - where we will once again growl at Larry across the Aggravation Board.
As much as I dislike the ice underfoot, I love to see it in the lake.
The way it wraps it's self around grasses and rocks.
Beautiful day on the lake.

Day 11 - 11th January 2018 -Starling, Redwing Blackbirds and Goldfinch

It's mild out this morning, hopefully the ice will melt that's underfoot. Mostly an issue on gravel/dirt roads, our back deck etc. Another good day at the museum, I enjoy this kind of work- going through old documents, photographs etc. cataloguing, getting everything put in place and ensuring it's preserved for future generations. Sometimes I get lost in it, wondering about the people who created the work, or it triggers a memory of some of my own research. That's the joy of working with local material and artifacts - I know the families or in many cases have researched them over the years. So all this talk of preserving I need to get my own family collection in some kind of order for the next generations. Winter project at home when I finish work.  Still no confirmation on what weather system is coming this weekend -certainly rain but other than that who knows yet!

Starling can be rather pretty when the sunlight hits their feathers.

Day 10 - 10th January 2018- Phlox, Grasses and a Blue Jay

Had a great day at work, Tuesday.  Didn't get done what I set out to do in the morning but got a whole lot of other things done. Some days are like that so you might as well just laugh and move on to something else.  Everywhere is slippery under foot now and coming home last night the roads were really slick. Drivers beware, I'm sure it will be the same this morning. Looks like more rain coming by the end  of the week and perhaps another system of sorts on Saturday. Stars are all out this morning, with a crescent moon in the sky and it's windy. I've miss watching the birds at the feeder these last few days - always like to see if something new has arrived.

The Phlox hedge is still standing, offering some shelter and food for the birds.
I'm amazed at the endurance of the grasses, faded but still strong.

Blue Jay was enjoying some rest time by the outside lights on Lois' arbor.

Day 9 - 9th January 2018 - Goldfinches and Woodpeckers

Quite a difference in the temperature this morning than what it has been the last week or so. Must be above 0 and some of the snow has melted off the back deck during the night. It's nice to be out of the deep freeze for a bit.  Rain in the forecast this week. Had a great first day back to work, dug in and got lots done. Today I'll move to the other building and work for a few hours. Larry reports that an Evening Grosbeak was at the feeders yesterday, draw back from working - I miss yard watch. By the time I get home at night it's too dark for pics and they have mostly finished feeding for the day. Exercise class last night - how we like to punish ourselves!
 Lots of Goldfinches
Quite a few Woodpeckers are around the yard.
Hairy hanging out in the suet feeder.

Day 8 - 8th January 2018- Pine Siskin, Grackle and Junco

Back to work this morning (for 3 weeks), going to take a few hours to adjust myself to that after being off for a month. Am anxious to get back in the swing of my project and wrap it up. Lots to do in the next few weeks. Good news - it's not as cold as it has been and this week certainly looks milder on the weather sites. A brief reprieve from the cold chill. Later in the week they are giving rain. Got to love living in NS - arctic cold one day, balmy the next! Got some things done around the house yesterday, laundry caught up, muffins made for Larry etc.  Pulled on the snow pants, scarf, mitts and went out for a quick jaunt - takes longer to put on outside clothes than the walk. I can remember as kids we'd get all dressed in our snow suits, boots, mitts and caps and sure enough someone would need to pee, 5 minutes after they got outside.

Goldfinch (left) and Pine Siskin (right).
Grackle - he comes every day.
The Junco finally came up to the feeder closest to the house.
