Day 311 - 6th November 2012 - Grasses, the Lake, Ducks and Fungi

Temperature is -0.5 this morning. Just checked the weather forecast and they are giving 30% chance of rain or flurries this morning. Looks like rain for most of the week. Hopefully 30% turns into 0%. The rest of the week looks wet so would like to have a day that Lexi and I can get out a roam around some. Have some baking to do today, am a few days behind on a birthday treat, but I'm sure the girls won't mind. Would also like to get a research report done for someone as well. The day will pass quickly as they all do lately.
Yesterday was nice but cooled off in the afternoon so we built a fire in the furnace. This time of the year I find the house is cold, then of course with a wood fire it gets too hot. Wood is not easy to regulate, but come the miserable days of winter and I love it. Managed to get 2 more rooms done, some laundry etc. That brings my total rooms completed to 10, I'm half way there! Rah!
I thought a very good friend could use some memories from Grandmother's Journal today:

Sunday 5th November 1972
Overcast and spitting snow or rain. Miserable day. I wasn't outside all day. Bob and two boys went out to traps in woods buggy. Nothing. Bobbie, Bettie and Kim came up. B & B up river, nothing again, water too high. Worrying about Ruth, Mum and Anne taking Jimmie back. Hope roads are ok. Kids stayed to supper. Kids talking whose coming this week.

Monday 6th November 1972
Beautiful day. Not even to cold. Lovely late afternoon an evening. To town and washed, did a bit of shopping. Back home around 3. Saw 2 partridges by gate. Walked down to the dogs one flew out of apple tree down there. Someone still at cozy camp. Not many robins.

Tuesday 7th November 1972
Home all day. Not to fine. Bob went to beaver traps out old road. No beaver. I baked bread and 2 pumpkin pies. Mother came up just before dark. Listened to Nixon's victory for a while. Part of the road has been scrapped up to Brier Hill Road.
I enjoy these grasses all year round.
There were a good gang of ducks around yesterday.
The lake was a clear as glass and totally peaceful, except for the ducks.
Still a bit of color showing through along the bank.
Thought I would sneak a little fungi in.
The rest of the family will soon be up, time to put the kettle back on. Enjoy your day!

Day 310 - 5th November 2012 - Lighthouses, Coves and Returning Home

It's Monday again, boy that day comes around fast. Well back to the massive housework today, not sure what else I've got to do except the standard laundry and baking. I managed 9 1/2 hours of sleep last night, must have been tired. Looking like nice weather for the next few days and rain towards the end of the week, although the temperatures appear to be a little lower. This morning it's +3.4, still nothing to complain about for November.
Can't believe the weekend went by so quickly. Yesterday morning I walked down to Beautiful Cove, it's certainly well named, but was really windy and cold. We caught the 9am ferry after the Firemen's breakfast and headed on our way home, with a few sightseeing detours and stops. There are always so many lovely coves to explore on this trip and even in November it's a great place to visit. Next time I'll pack my gloves as my hands got cold taking photos along the shore. Of course we were the only tourists at this time of year.
The Northend Lighthouse [I hope I have that right] with Coast Guard buildings, located on Brier Island.
Looking down Beautiful Cove you can see across Grand Passage to Brier Island.
The sun was emerging from behind the clouds.
The ferry has taken us over to East Ferry and we are homeward bound.
Didn't get too far before I hollered to stop - along Digby Neck.
We saw a sign that said Look Off so headed up another side road but ended up at Gulliver's Cove. There's a pretty neat Interpretative sign there telling about the Legend of Cut Throat Gulliver.

Another wonderful view and it was worth getting lost to see.
The wind turbines.
Another detour to a favourite spot - Gilbert's Cove - found some Canada Geese here.
More lovely scenery.
Our last stop was a lake somewhere close to Forest Glen.
Well time to get moving. Enjoy your day!

Day 309 - 4th November 2012 - A trip to the Island

Did you remember to set your clocks back before you went to bed last night? Yes it's Sunday and that time of year when most people gain an extra hour of sleep. I managed to force myself to stay in until 5:30am [new time], only because we are somewhere else and I truly hate to roam around some one's house in the middle of the night. Of course Lexi got up with me but I took her out for a few minutes then sent her back to bed with Larry. Lovely and peaceful here. This morning we are going to head to the Tiverton's Firemen's Breakfast before going home. I like to support other Fire Departments when we go somewhere.
Had a great day yesterday. Left home early, got the scrape and metal dropped off then headed to the Island.  Caught the 10:30am Ferry, it's only a few minutes across. After we had lunch Roger and Dorothy took us to Boars Head, which is mostly up hill and I mean up hill - the first jaunt of it feels like it's straight up. What one would call a good cardio workout! It will help to remove the calories from the wonderful seafood chowder and chocolate trifle we had at lunch time. After that, they had an errand to run so we headed back and stopped at Flour Cove to take photos. Beautiful views at both places. We took a little drive around Freeport, along Northeast Cove and back to the house. Great pork stew for supper and I had a hot fudge sundae with coffee ice cream for dessert. This is my all time favourite kind of ice cream dressed the perfect way. A game of crokinole rounded off the evening, then the guys watched a movie. It was way past my time to head to bed.
The little park on Digby Neck that we always stop so Lexi can have a break before getting on the Ferry.
Make the very sharp turn at East Ferry to get to the Ferry.
Looking towards Tiverton from the Ferry.
The lighthouse at Boars Head, so named because the jut of land resembles a boars head when the tide is just right.

East Ferry on the left, Tiverton on the right, the body of water in between is Petite Passage.
The ferry coming in - Petit Princess.
We drove down to Flour Cove, lots of waves and spray!

Looking from the Northeast Cove - you can just see  the lighthouse on Peter's Island in the far right.
Well that's it for now. Enjoy your day!

Day 308 - 3rd November 2012 - Gone to the Birds!

So we are already to head out this morning, camera batteries are charged so fingers crossed that it doesn't rain.  This is one place I love to take photos. The scenery is awesome, oops forgot to mention we are going to one of the islands off of Digby and staying in Freeport. And did I mention Larry has a truckload of scrape and metal to exchange in Marshalltown at the depot there. Thinks he's going to make his first million - but who knows maybe he will! I don't think it's worth driving there to get rid of it but since we are going in that general direction anyway, it's a good chance to get rid of it. Clean out the shed at least.
Got packed yesterday, house cleaned up, trifle made and went to town. Small turn out for the Veterans Coffee Party and Display but that's not surprising, nice to see those who came out though. Many of the ones who come are veterans of World War II or the Korean War, all of which are getting up there in age, however, members of the local Legion always come out to support us as well. The display stays up for another week and can be enjoyed by many patrons of the library. I got a little carried away with photos today but it was nice to actually get out and catch a few different things. There are lots of Bluejays and Chickadees around now.
The greedy bluejay - snacking on the cracked corn for the ducks.
Quite a few ducks in the lake - both wild and tame.
Unusual looking clouds hung over the lake last evening.
Enjoying a few fat scrapes.
The chickadee is among my favourite birds.
They are so cute, flitting around from place to place.
He reminds me of a little old man.
The Chickadee shares the seeds with the White Breasted Nuthatch.
The Nuthatches are like little clowns.
Time to have another coffee and get both of them moving otherwise we'll never get out of here. Enjoy your day!

Day 307 - 2nd November 2012 - The Lake, Leaves and Rain drops

Well Friday has come around again, can't believe the week has flown by so quickly. Stars are out this morning and temperature is +6.9. Lots to do around here this morning, we are heading to Dorothy & Roger's tomorrow for a visit and I've got to go to town this afternoon. Our annual Veteran's Coffee Party and Display is being held at the library at 2pm, but need to set up the display ahead of time. So I'm off to do some volunteer work. Will grab some groceries while in town and do a few other errands. Made brownies yesterday [sorry Sherri] so when I get home today with whip cream, skor bars etc. I'll put together a Death by Chocolate Trifle to take with us.
The sun came out yesterday afternoon which was a welcome visitor. Of course we did have a hard shower after supper on the way to exercise class, hopefully that's it for a few days. Made it through another class - some things are getting easier others near impossible - thanks to Cindy for the encouragement when my opposite limbs don't want to co-operate at the same time!  Can't believe it's so mild, we haven't had a fire on in the furnace for most of the week. Easy on the wood pile! Got another room done yesterday - my sewing room which also houses my photograph collection, extra recipe books that don't fit in the pantry and a catch all for a few  other things. Several garbage bags of junk were purged from that room and I can now get around in there again. One of the items on my winter bucket list is to go through all my photos and organize them. I've had this on the list for several years but never seem to get it done. These aren't photos I've taken but ones I've inherited. Guess I better get a few more albums.
Still a little bit of color along the shorelines.
I love this bush in the neighbour's yard.
The sun was trying to break through.
A few maple leaves left.
And some oak leaves.

Rain drops remain on the empty branches.

My coffee cup is empty, so time to refill and figure out what needs to be done. Enjoy your day!

Day 306 - 1st November 2012- Deer, Flowers and Sailboats

A new month begins - what will it bring? October certainly went out with a roar and made quite a statement. Even though we had thunder, lightning and torrential rains, I am so thankful to live where I do. So many other places were really hit hard by Hurricane Sandy earlier this week. Not sure what the plans are today, some of the usual housework stuff but other than that we'll see what the day brings. Exercise class tonight of course - time to start working away at all that junk I ate on the weekend. There should really be a 12 step program to get chocolate clean. I'm sure it became part of my regular diet again on the weekend and it's so hard to stop! I wonder if I bury the leftover Halloween candy in the backyard if that would help?? I can bake and not eat but there is something about chocolate bars that call my name - way too loud.

Thought I'd check out Grandmother's Journal this morning:
1st November 1972
Beautiful Fall Day. Ground looked like it had snowed. Bob up early got a big beaver. Mother and Bob went up the river to put out traps. Lots of signs. Had a beautiful trip. She sure enjoyed it. S.R. and his boys going to camp. Had dinner when they got back. Drove over to Ohio. They were discouraged as they (Jim & Dick) didn't see any beaver signs. Black birds still here, lots of Jays - Blues and Canada.
2nd November 1972
Another cold night. Southerly winds to day so no doubt warmer. Mum and Bob went up river to look traps. No fur of any kind.  Mum had a good time. Worked on buggy and out to Prongy Pine, no beaver. Bob's back acted up, worries me no end. Mother and I sat up late. Me worrying. Got through the night ok.
Trudeau is going to form a government.

I've borrowed a few of Larry's photos - hopefully I can get back out again tomorrow.
I think he took these in September.
Just a little camera shy.
As you can tell this is his favourite topic.
The fawns still had spots here.
A sunny afternoon with sailboats in the Harbour.
Time for another coffee and then the rest of the house will be up. Enjoy your day!
